Evans begins his interview by providing an overview of his background and education. He describes how his father’s career in social work influenced his career choice. He discusses starting his career at Boys Town, moving to Florida, and his eventual recruitment to the Munroe-Meyer Institute. He details the state of the psychology department on his arrival and the shift from a team evaluation model to a treatment orientation. He discusses the importance of parent involvement in treatment and preparing students for the field. Evans discusses rural health in Nebraska including initial efforts to reach rural populations, the general state of care in Nebraska, and expansion efforts. He details the BHECN program and its connection to the Safe Haven Act. He reflects on memories and influential colleagues from his career. He discusses the challenge of a growing bureaucracy as well as the lessons learned from employing people with disabilities. He describes the growth of clinics outside of Nebraska with grant funds. Evans concludes his interview by discussing how he is active at MMI after retirement as well as reflecting on the growth of the Institute and his achievements within it.
