Bayles beings his interview describing his background, family history, and educational path. He details his early lab career and being recruited to UNMC. He discusses getting grant funding for the Center for Staphylococcal Research and starting the Nebraska Transposon Mutant Library. Bayles details National Strategic Research Institute (NSRI) and Department of Defense projects including the Nebraska Drug Discovery and Development Pipeline and combining existing efforts to form the Global Center for Health Security. He describes moving into the role of Vice Chancellor for Research and his goals with research IT, growing the Department of Defense relationship, and future funding opportunities. He discusses working with and developing students. Bayles concludes his interview by reflecting on working in administration, definitions of success, awards he’s received, and the importance of basketball to his recruitment to UNMC.
