Oyewole begins her interview describing her upbringing in the Republic of Benin and how her education path led her to pursue research at UNMC. She describes her initial involvement with the Graduates and Professionals Representing Achievement, Diversity and Science (GRADS) group, an overview of the group as a whole and the importance of mentorship. She details the group’s leadership positions and evolving priorities as well as participation in social activism and events. Oyewole describes the lasting relationships she has made from the group, the impact GRADS had on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic and how GRADS helped her build a sense of community as a Black woman. Oyewole concludes her interview reflecting on the future of the group, lessons learned from her leadership positions and advice for future student and employee groups.
