Tape beings his interview discussing his background, his introduction to the medical field, and his education. He gives an overview of his research as well as how he was recruited to UNMC through a dog and his path to division chief. He provides a brief history of the General Medicine Division, the shift away from volunteer faculty, and the split off of the Hospital Medicine Division. Tape describes the merger between Clarkson Hospital and University Hospital. He details his involvement with the American College of Physicians (ACP) and how it led to his work in health care policy and the Patient Centered Medical Home model of care with residents in clinics. He reflects on the causes of the shortage of primary care physicians and the change to the Primary Care First model. Tape details his involvement with the Medicare Access and Children’s Health Insurance Reauthorization Act (MACRA) legislation and writing opioid guidelines with the CDC. Tape reflects on his leadership roles, overseas trips, and skills he has acquired. He describes his relationship with Robert Wigton including joining the Brunswik Society and travel. He describes working with James Campbell and the COSTAR records management software. Tape concludes his interview by reflecting on teaching, practicing, retirement, and career successes.
