Carmines begins her interview describing her background, educational path, and interests. She discusses her recruitment to UNMC and the evolution of her research in renal physiology. She describes her experience as a faculty member and advice she gives students. Carmines describes her reluctance to join the administration, attending the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program at Drexel University, and creating the Seguidor program for Graduate Studies. She details the growth of the Graduate Studies program including the effects of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences (IGPBS) and the College of Public Health had on enrollment. She discusses her experience as a woman in leadership, the growing numbers of women in leadership roles on campus, helpful skills she acquired, and notable mentors. She discusses the establishment of the Writing Center partnership with UNO through her golf hobby and the creation of the Dissertation Boot Camp for PhD candidates. Carmines concludes her interview reflecting on awards she received, her retirement, and offers advice.
