Mr. Powell begins his interview describing his background and family, his parents’ employment and growing up in the North Omaha community including his experience with African American health care. He discusses the beginning of his career at UNMC in the biomedical communications department and the support he received to continue his education. Powell details how Benscoter and Stevenson helped him advance his career at UNMC into facilities management. Powell describes the facilities plant, his role in the department and returning to school for heating and air with his supervisor’s support. He discusses what gives him job satisfaction, the changes in the refrigeration field as well as on campus during his career. Powell concludes his interview discussing his personal relationships with his children, elder community members and the youth in North Omaha. He also lauds Haven’s contribution to his career advancement.
